Job Summary

As a Senior Data Engineer at Southwest Airlines, you will be responsible for leading and providing expertise to functional task groups, participating in cross-functional initiatives, and providing guidance and direction to drive process improvements. You will work closely with various external vendors, partners, and stakeholders to provide effective solutions and insights. Your primary goal will be to design, develop, and implement data pipelines, architectures, and tools to meet business requirements and drive business growth.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and provide expertise to functional task groups and participate in cross-functional initiatives to drive business growth and improvement.
  • Provide guidance and direction to drive process improvements, including assisting with establishing and prompting on policies.
  • Work with various external vendors, partners, and stakeholders to provide effective solutions and insights.
  • Utilize autonomous judgment within broadly defined policies and practices to determine the best approach to achieving work.
  • Collect and analyze large, complex sets of data that meet non-functional and functional business requirements.
  • Identify, plan, and implement internal process improvements, including re-designing systems for greater flexibility, optimizing data delivery, and automating manual processes.
  • Design and implement required systems for timely extraction, transformation, and loading of data from various data sources using AWS and SQL technologies.
  • Develop analytical tools to leverage the data pipeline, providing meaningful insights into key business performance metrics, including operational efficiency and customer acquisition.
  • Collaborate with partners, including data, design, product, and leadership teams, to help them with data-related technical issues.
  • May perform other job duties as directed by Employee's Managers.

Requirements and Qualifications

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, such as Computer Science, Engineering, or Information Technology.
  • At least 5 years of experience in data engineering, data architecture, or a related field.
  • Strong knowledge of data engineering principles, practices, and technologies, including AWS, SQL, and data pipeline design.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in a relevant field, such as Computer Science, Engineering, or Information Technology.
  • Experience with data engineering tools and technologies, such as Apache Spark, Apache Kafka, and AWS Glue.
  • Knowledge of data governance, data quality, and data security principles and practices.
  • Experience with cloud-based data platforms, such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
  • Certifications in data engineering, such as AWS Certified Data Engineer or Google Cloud Certified - Professional Data Engineer.
