Remote Sr. Coding Specialist (Mental Health)

CSI Companies is hiring for a Remote Sr. Coding Specialist (Mental Health) for our healthcare client based in Texas. Hours: Monday-Friday, 40 hours/week, 8a-5p CST Location: Remote, must reside in Texas Pay: $25-34/hour based on experience and education Position Type: Long-term Consultant; potential for FTE Job Summary: The Sr. Coding Specialist is responsible for accurately assigning diagnostic and procedural codes to behavioral and mental health services using ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding. This role ensures compliance with all regulatory guidelines, payer policies, and internal procedures while supporting accurate reimbursement and efficient claims processing. Job Responsibilities:

  • Review and analyze medical records to assign accurate ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes for behavioral and mental health services but, coding for primary services is a plus.
  • Ensure coding aligns with federal, state, and payer-specific regulations, including Medicare and Medicaid guidelines.
  • Work with providers and clinical staff to clarify documentation and ensure accurate code assignment.
  • Identify and resolve coding discrepancies, denials, and help with billing issues.
  • Assist in internal audits and quality improvement initiatives to ensure coding accuracy and compliance.
  • Stay up to date with industry changes, including updates to coding guidelines, payer policies, and healthcare regulations.
  • Utilize electronic health record (EHR) systems and coding software to support accurate and efficient coding workflows.
  • Maintain productivity and accuracy standards as set by the organization.
  • Assist with special projects and/or other duties as assigned.
  • Abides by the Standards of Ethical Coding as set forth by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) and adheres to official coding guidelines.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in health information management or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 1 years of mental health and behavioral health coding experience in an outpatient or inpatient setting. Prefer 2-5 years of coding experience.
  • Possess and maintain AAPC and/or AHIMA certification required (CPC or CCS required, CRC or RHIT a plus).
  • Experience with medical billing, coding denials and revenue cycle processes preferred.
  • Must live in Texas (can be onsite or remote – there may be an occasional team meeting in Houston at corporate headquarters)
  • Strong knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding, with expertise in behavioral and mental health services.
  • Familiarity with federal healthcare regulations, HIPAA, and payer-specific policies.
  • Proficiency in EHR and coding software (e.g., Epic-preferred, Cerner, 3M, or similar).
  • Detail-oriented with excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. Prefer strong Microsoft Office skills set.
  • Ability to work independently while meeting productivity and accuracy standards.
  • Effective communication skills for collaboration with healthcare providers and revenue cycle teams.
