Drawing on significant transactional experience, this role will work closely with attorneys to identify high-impact opportunities for AI-enabled solutions that improve efficiency, consistency, and client service.As a member of the Innovation Department, the Innovation Attorney will design and scale practice-specific workflows, contribute to knowledge management initiatives, support strategic planning, and help drive adoption of emerging tools. This position requires strong legal acumen, comfort with evolving technology, and the ability to translate practice needs into practical, scalable solutions.This position may be based in any of Reed Smith’s U.S. offices. While Chicago is listed as the primary posting location, the firm welcomes applications from qualified candidates interested in any of our U.S. office locations.Job Duties And Responsibilities
- Partner with transactional attorneys to identify and implement high-value applications of generative AI and other innovative technology, grounded in a strong understanding of their work, clients, and industries.
- Design, promote, and scale practice-specific, AI-enabled workflows in close collaboration with colleagues across the Firm’s Innovation Department.
- Gather feedback, assess needs, and identify opportunities where generative AI can streamline core aspects of transactional work, including due diligence, drafting, contract review, and knowledge management.
- Participate in practice group management teams, technology-related working groups, and pilots of emerging AI solutions, representing the perspective of a lawyer with transactional experience.
- Support Knowledge Management initiatives for transactional practices by leveraging AI to make knowledge more accessible and scalable, including designing a process for associates to: (1) gather documents from relevant deals, both historical and new, (2) use the Firm’s AI tools to extract key data, (3) review the results for accuracy, and (4) save the content in Foundation.
- Serve as a conduit between the Innovation Department and Reed Smith Legal Solutions with respect to the work of transactional attorneys.
- Deliver presentations and training that showcase practical, creative, and practice-aligned uses of generative AI and other innovative tools.
- Support the strategy and budgeting functions of the Innovation Department in collaboration with attorneys.
- Serve as a subject matter resource on generative AI solutions intended to support transactional practices, evaluating their impact and supporting effective adoption.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience as a transactional attorney in a law firm, or as an innovation attorney with a focus on transactional practices.
- Experience designing or implementing practice-specific workflows, training, or change initiatives that improve efficiency and client service.
- Experience working with generative AI or legal technology tools in support of transactional practices.
- Law firm experience preferred.
- Ability to translate transaction-focused legal experience into practical, AI-enabled solutions.
- Proficiency in communicating and presenting complex ideas to diverse audiences, with the ability to build credibility and influence adoption across all levels of the firm.
- Ability to adapt to evolving technologies and client needs, with a demonstrated interest in exploring emerging legal tools and solutions.
- Sit and/or stand for prolonged periods, as the role involves extensive computer use and meetings.
- Prolonged visual focus and finger, hand, and wrist dexterity associated with computer use, including typing and using a mouse.
- Proficiently use computers, telecommunication devices, and digital collaboration tools.
- Accurately read and interpret written documents, computer screens, and other visual displays.
- Hear and understand verbal communication, including conversations and instructions, to facilitate effective collaboration and coordination with team members and stakeholders.
- Ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing, and collaborate with individuals across all levels of the organization.
- Ability to exercise independent judgment and discretion in decision-making and adapt to changing work situations, while maintaining composure and resilience in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to concentrate for extended periods, think critically, and make strategic decisions in a fast-paced environment.
