Job Responsibilities

As an Engineering Manager at blithequark, you will be responsible for managing and mentoring a team of senior and highly experienced engineers, developing the technical vision and roadmap for the area, and balancing the needs of stakeholders with competing demands and priorities. • Leading the development of tools and infrastructure that enhance the productivity and efficiency of our ML researchers, including the design, implementation, and maintenance of large-scale distributed systems and applications
• Collaborating with research managers to identify frictions, design and build engineering solutions, and improve the overall ML research workflow
• Mentoring and guiding a team of senior engineers, providing technical guidance, and ensuring the team's skills and expertise align with blithequark's technical vision and goals
• Developing and executing the technical roadmap for the Research Engineering Tools team, ensuring alignment with blithequark's overall technical strategy and goals
• Working closely with cross-functional teams, including ML researchers, product managers, and other engineering teams, to ensure seamless integration and adoption of tools and infrastructure
• Driving innovation and experimentation, exploring new technologies and approaches to improve the ML research workflow and drive business success

Essential Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you should have:

• 2+ years of experience as an Engineering Manager, and 2+ years of industry experience overall
• Strong software design and development skills (in Python, Scala, Java, C++, or an equivalent production language)
• Experience with parallel and distributed computing
• BS in Computer Science or a related discipline
• Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders
• Experience working in a machine learning environment, with a strong understanding of ML concepts and techniques

Preferred Qualifications

While not required, the following qualifications are preferred:

• 4+ years of experience as an Engineering Manager, and 10+ years of industry experience overall
• Experience leading a developer tools team, with a strong understanding of developer workflows and pain points
• Experience running and customizing Bazel, or comparable distributed build systems (including Buck, Pants, and others)
• Experience with machine learning frameworks, including TensorFlow, PyTorch, and others
• Strong understanding of cloud computing platforms, including AWS, GCP, or Azure
