Job Summary Public Rights Project (PRP) is seeking a Media Relations Coordinator to support our media relations activities for the organization and our network of local government partners. In this role, you will be a driving force in elevating the voices of local leaders, government partners, and communities on the frontlines of justice. Reporting to the Director of Communications and working closely with the rest of PRPs Communications & Marketing team, you will craft media materials, prepare leaders for high-profile press opportunities, and cultivate relationships with journalists to expand PRPs brand presence. You will also monitor and analyze media coverage, generating insights that inform strategy and highlight PRPs impact. This is an exciting opportunity for a communications professional to gain exposure to senior leaders, high-impact litigation and policy work, and national media platforms. The Coordinator will not only support day-to-day media operations but also contribute creatively to the organizations storytelling, messaging, and digital engagement strategies. The ideal candidate profile will be based on the West Coast to strengthen coordination with PRPs West Coast-based partners. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Support the development of briefing materials, talking points, and background documents for PRP staff and local government leaders ahead of media interviews and press opportunities. Coordinate media relations activities, from helping prioritize media opportunities to gathering information for journalists to vetting new media inquiries. Track media coverage daily using platforms such as Meltwater (or similar tools), compile reports, and analyze reach, impact, and trends. Monitor news around issue areas of focus; capturing and reporting out themes; identifying opportunities and recommendations on how best to take advantage of them. Research specific reporters to understand their beats/style. Build and maintain media lists focused on different issue areas, media, and markets. Assist with media event production, such as press conferences or briefings. Compile media clips and coverage reporting on a biweekly basis. Provide support to the department leaders, such as taking notes during check-ins and other internal meetings; drafting agendas, notes, and next steps; and updating action plans. Education and/or Experience 35 years of relevant professional experience, ideally within a government, campaign, advocacy, or policy environment, including at least 2 years coordinating media relations. Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of training, education, and experience. Demonstrated experience preparing media materials and supporting leaders ahead of press engagements. Familiarity with media tracking and analytics platforms, with the ability to evaluate reach and engagement. Strong interest in communications for social justice and a solid understanding of how the media industry operates. Passion and commitment to using the power of government to protect marginalized communities civil rights and freedoms. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Exceptional communicator excellent writing, editing, and proofing skills, with the ability to craft clear, compelling messages that resonate across diverse audiences. Strategic and analytical thinker skilled at media monitoring, identifying trends, and drawing insights that inform proactive communications strategies. Highly responsive and detail-oriented able to juggle multiple priorities, adapt quickly to shifting news cycles, and deliver under tight deadlines. Collaborative and proactive a self-starter who thrives in a fast-paced, remote team environment, but who also knows when to ask for input and bring forward solutions. Strong project manager organized, efficient, and able to balance competing deadlines with creativity and focus. Resilient and flexible comfortable navigating ambiguity, handling urgent deadlines, and pivoting to meet unexpected communications needs. Other Duties and Responsibilities Other duties as assigned. Organizational Relationship Reports to the Director of Communications. Physical Demands Requires sitting, talking, and listening for up to 8 hours per day. Certain situations may require lifting items up to 20 pounds.

Work Environment

Fully remote organization and team. Preference for West Coast. This role will require 10% travel for PRP events or meetings.

Compensation

The determined salary range for this level 2 role is set at $70,500 - $95,000. For internal equity, PRP can not engage in salary negotiations outside of this range.
