This posting is for current BookNook tutors only. New applicants should apply to one of the other open roles. BookNook is seeking passionate educators to join our tutoring community as independent contractors, working up to 30 hours per week. BookNook Tutors are on the front lines of closing the early-learning gap for K-8 students during a key period of their educational journey. Our Online Reading Tutors work in live, synchronous online tutoring sessions using the BookNook platform and video conferencing software. This is an exciting opportunity to have a direct, positive impact on students. BookNook tutors must reside in and work from the United States and have a US mailing address. We are unable to engage with tutors who reside in the following states: California, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, and Vermont, as well as US territories. Position Specifics

  • Position Type: 1099-eligible independent contractor
  • Pay Rate: $20 per hour ($10 per 30-minute session)
  • Timeline: Programming typically runs during the school year, with the busiest months from September-May
  • Schedule: Up to 30 hours per week based on availability provided and the number of active tutoring programs. Schedules may vary based on school requests.
  • Sessions are held only on weekdays (no weekends) and can be before school, during school, or after school.
  • Program duration varies. Tutors are expected to commit to a full program with the same group of students throughout (duration will be known when series are offered).

Responsibilities

  • Conduct virtual tutoring sessions covering vocabulary, phonics, and other science of reading elements using the BookNook platform—no lesson planning required!
  • Manage student behavior and engagement throughout sessions
  • Create a safe, respectful learning environment
  • Maintain positive relationships with students
  • Document observations for each session in the session notes Requirements
  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Must reside in and work from the United States, with a US mailing address.
  • Please note: BookNook is unable to engage with tutors who reside in the following states: California, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, and Vermont, as well as US territories.
  • Knowledge of and experience with reading instruction based in the science of reading.
  • Ability to build meaningful connections with students to create a motivating and encouraging environment.
  • Creativity and flexibility to meet students where they are.
  • Classroom experience and/or online teaching/tutoring experience in Reading/ELA is preferred; experience can include, but is not limited to:
  • having a current/previous teaching license
  • serving as a substitute teacher or teaching assistant, paraprofessional, professor, or instructor
  • enrollment in a teacher credential or education degree program
  • AND/OR tutoring for another tutoring company.
  • Access to a computer (laptop or desktop), webcam, clean and distraction-free environment, and reliable, high-speed internet connection with a speed of at least 20 mbps is a necessity for the position. Our Qualification Process
  • Apply — Submit an application online and typically receive a decision within 5 business days regarding the next steps in the process.
  • Interview — Applicants invited to our one-way interview round will be asked to submit video responses answering questions designed to help us evaluate their experience and educational knowledge. This one-way interview is intended to be completed in less than 30 minutes, similar to a face-to-face interview.
  • Qualification Decision — After the interview round, our team will notify applicants within 5-10 business days of the decision to move forward with the onboarding process.
  • Certification — If you pass the interview, a new certification course will be assigned to you in the Tutor Community within a week of the decision.
