The University of Maine at Augusta is seeking applicants for the part-time temporary position of Academic Writing Tutor in the UMA Augusta Writing Center. Academic writing tutors foster UMA's community of writers. The position includes acting as a 'practice audience' for writers on various projects, such as essays, lab reports, resumes, proposals, and creative writing. Additionally, writing tutors lead discussions on writing processes and challenges in one-to-one, small group, and workshop settings in the writing center, classrooms, and online. Academic writing tutors receive ongoing tutor education, faculty mentorship, and opportunities to engage with the broader field of writing studies. This position includes in-person and virtual consultations with students and on occasion, faculty and staff.
Responsibilities include:
- Provide feedback to students by asking questions and sharing resources
- Help writers to brainstorm new and expanded ideas
- Refer students to other resources when appropriate, such as the campus librarians
- Assist classrooms with writing tutor support as needed
- Work with small groups or individuals on a regular basis during assigned hours, in-person or online
- Work on additional special projects as requested by Augusta Writing Center Director
- Maintain student confidentiality
- Attend monthly meetings
- Previous Writing Tutor or comparable work experience
- High School Diploma or GED
- Ability to communicate effectively using oral, written, and electronic methods, while maintaining confidentiality
- Proficiency with computer programs such as Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, as well as Gmail and other software and various websites
- Ability to prioritize and manage work
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks in an autonomous work environment as well as work effectively as part of a team
