Key Responsibilities

Reporting to the Medical Director and working as part of the multidisciplinary fertility team, the IVF Specialist / Consultant will be responsible for the following:

Clinical Practice

  • Review and assess couples attending the clinic for assisted conception treatment, including detailed medical history evaluation and risk assessment
  • Determine suitability for treatment and confirm appropriate ovulation induction protocols
  • Monitor response to ovarian stimulation and adjust treatment plans as clinically indicated
  • Perform egg retrieval procedures and embryo transfers
  • Participate in weekend rota and provide on-call medical cover as required
  • Provide counselling support to patients throughout their treatment journey
  • Maintain timely and professional communication with referring consultants and general practitioners
  • Contribute to regular review of clinic outcomes, protocols, and practices to maintain and improve safety and effectiveness
  • Support the medical management and delivery of Fertility and Andrology Clinics
  • Participate in data collection, audit, and clinical outcome reporting

Research & Teaching

  • Contribute to, and where appropriate lead, research activity in reproductive medicine
  • Support the teaching and supervision of medical undergraduates, postgraduates, and other healthcare professionals
  • Promote evidence-based practice and contribute to academic development within the service

Quality & Governance

  • Ensure patient confidentiality is maintained in accordance with clinic policy and relevant legislation including the Data Protection Act
  • Maintain accurate, secure, and contemporaneous clinical records in line with regulatory standards
  • Work within the legal and regulatory framework governing assisted reproduction in the UK
  • Contribute to quality assurance processes, audits, and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Support compliance with all HFEA licensing requirements

Personal & Professional Development

  • Maintain professional registration and good standing with the General Medical Council
  • Participate in annual appraisal and maintain a Personal Development Plan
  • Complete mandatory training requirements and maintain up-to-date competencies
  • Engage in Continuing Professional Development and maintain revalidation requirements

Experience & Qualifications

Essential

  • CCST or equivalent in Obstetrics & Gynaecology
  • Entry on the Specialist Register (or eligibility for entry)
  • MRCOG or equivalent
  • Evidence of working at senior level within an IVF unit
  • Demonstrable experience in assisted conception techniques
  • Strong communication and organisational skills
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team
  • Ability to work calmly under pressure

Desirable

  • Subspecialty training in Reproductive Medicine
  • Higher degree or research qualification in reproductive medicine
  • Evidence of scientific publication record
  • Active participation in research
  • Demonstrable presentation skills
  • Ability to develop local professional networks
