Job description: The Department of Performing and Media Arts is housed within the elegant Schwartz Center for the Performing Arts, which encompass all the elements needed for teaching and performance in theatre, film and media and dance: four performance spaces, dance and theatre rehearsal studios, a sound stage, scenery, costume and prop shops, sound and lighting design studios, and film editing and production suites. The Schwartz Center serves as a catalyst for the creative and intellectual endeavors of the many talented students, faculty, and staff at Cornell.
The Department leads students from all disciplines through artistic and scholarly explorations of live and mediated forms of creativity and expression. Students are challenged to think creatively, critically, and historically about the world around them as they identify and interpret the power of image, sound, gesture, and movement and cultivate their own artistic and academic voices.
The Communications Coordinator assists with the promotion of department productions, events, classes and all other Performing & Media Arts (PMA) communications in accordance with PMA?s mission and brand, utilizing multiple platforms, including print, digital, the department web site, and social media. The position supports the Communications Specialist to implement marketing plans, develops, pitches, writes and edits stories and content for PMA, including articles, news releases, press releases, articles and announcements, for print and digital purposes.
The Communications Coordinator creates written material for PMA promotional and outreach events, including but not limited to Orientation, Cornell Days, the Professional Directions series (workshops and lectures by scholars, performers, and entertainment industry professionals), and Giving Day.
Cornell communicators share a mission to enhance and preserve the university?s brand and reputation as a top research institution and a leader in higher education, and to support and promote critical programs that serve the university?s teaching, research, and public engagement mission.
Communication services are carried out through a matrixed organizational system in which University Relations houses the departments of News (Cornell Chronicle), Media Relations (pitching and servicing media requests), Brand (cornell.edu, multimedia production, brand management and governance), Strategic Communications (communications plans, key messaging, social media management), and Cornellians (digital alumni publication).
Communicators in colleges, schools, and units regularly collaborate with, and consult, University Relations departments. University Relations serves as a partner and resource for all college/unit communicators.
This is a regular 20 hour/week, 12 month/year position ? 50% FTE. After a period of training, the possibility of a hybrid schedule (1-2 days/remote) may be discussed.
Required Qualifications:
- Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing. Develop and maintain positive and effective working relationships, work productively as a team member as well as under minimum supervision.
- Passionate about working in an organization that values and promotes diversity, equity, inclusion, anti-racism, and wellbeing.
- Associate?s degree and 2 to 4 years professional experience in journalism, communications, marketing, writing, multimedia production, etc.; or equivalent combination.
- Ability to write quickly, clearly, and concisely in collaboration with others.
- Experiencing generating, reporting, writing, editing stories, multimedia projects, and/or social media content that advances a unit?s mission and goals.
- Working understanding of strategic, brand, and multimedia communications.
- Proficiency with MS Office suite is expected.
- Experience with (or ability to quickly master) web publishing/maintenance software (Drupal); PhotoShop; InDesign.
- Discretion and sound judgment are required. Must be able to maintain confidentiality, sensitivity, and grace with competing deadlines and pressures.
