Summer jobs, Student jobs Position: GIS and Stewardship Officer Type: age 30 & under / summer Organization: BC Marine Trails Location: This position is largely remote but would prefer a candidate from the Nanaimo to Ladysmith area in BC. The BC Marine Trails (BCMT) needs a talented and passionate individual to join our team as a GIS and Stewardship Officer to assist with updating GIS software and GIS reporting applications particularly over the summer months when we receive the majority of this data. The candidate will also help with some on-the-ground volunteer cleanup projects. The position offers the perfect opportunity to develop skills in conservation efforts, sustainable recreation and citizen-based reconciliation. The candidate would work both locally and regionally, ensuring the work plan aligns with and follows the goals and initiatives of our 2024 - 2027 strategic plan. The candidate will work with three staff members and a team of volunteers, who are either retired and professionally trained or currently working in a professional capacity. We use a variety of digital tools to communicate and share workloads between staff and volunteers through Slack channels, Knack, and Google Suite. The candidate will also work in a world-class mapping environment and will receive support from volunteers such as software engineers, GIS technicians, strategists, and experienced team members. The candidate will be part of a novel conservation program - Coastal Caretakers, which is both a group of volunteers submitting conservation data about sites along the BC coast and an innovative citizen-based reconciliation program. In the past two years, the BC Marine Trails has developed a dropzone program. Working with the Western Canada Marine Response Corporation, Ocean Legacy and other stewardship groups, we have been setting up places for debris pickup and recycling in multiple BC locations. The GIS Officer will help coordinate this work. The Candidate Will Be

  • Overseeing GIS applications and maintenance.
  • Reviewing GIS content currently on mapping systems. This would include making recommendations and working with various committees and working with a senior GIS staff member.
  • Updating a Survey123 App and the BC Marine Trails maps with current site and region information and photos. This App is updated using an ArcGIS connect sheet (spreadsheet). The candidate will work with the senior GIS staff member.
  • The candidate will help support our stewardship team by monitoring marine debris data received from paddlers and boaters who submit Site Condition Reports.
  • Coordinating with the BCMT Stewardship and Communications Officer on collaborative clean ups and invasive species removal projects.

Skills And Training The Candidate, with specific training, would be expected to become competent in maintaining, updating, and backing up some or all applications and would make recommendations for technology changes to the committees and the board. The software includes:

  • ArcGIS Experience Builder - to edit our maps
  • ArcGIS Pro - to process our First Nations layer and other layers
  • Survey123 - to manage our site reporting app
  • Working with stewardship coordinator to monitor marine debris sites
  • Knack - using BCMT’s current database, with weekly backup of site data and SCR data.
  • Other Maintenance jobs.

Meetings and Support The BCMT IT team, a project leader, and regular staff-committee chair meetings, will support the youth candidate in this position. Additionally, we have a well-developed handbook that covers a worker’s rights and responsibilities in BC. A training guide will be provided at the beginning of the candidate’s work schedule.

Compensation

The candidate will begin work on June 1 2026 and end the position on July 24th 2026. The rate of pay is $25 an hour plus basic benefits including 4% holiday pay.
