NCPR Southern Adirondacks/Community Engagement Reporter

Remote · USA Full-time New today

North Country Public Radio is seeking a creative, ambitious, and talented reporter to join our award-winning, nationally recognized news team. This position is centered in Glens Falls, NY, a growing city with tons of new energy, reporting stories from places across the southern Adirondacks and Champlain Valley, from Ticonderoga to Minerva to North Creek to Lake George. Join a hardworking news team working in a geographically diverse region, from rolling hills and farmland in the St. Lawrence River and Thousand Islands, to the Adirondack Mountains, the Tug Hill Plateau, and Akwesasne Mohawk territory. We tell the stories of the people who live in our region in eye- and ear-catching ways, challenging our assumptions and nurturing our curiosity. We dig deep and seek out the voices of people who haven’t been heard from a range of backgrounds. Our news team is a supportive and creative group of people who nurture each other. Our mottos are “get out of the building” and “have more fun!” Headquartered at St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY, NCPR is in a beautiful part of the country, including the Adirondack Mountains, the St. Lawrence River, Lake Champlain, Fort Drum Army base, Akwesasne Mohawk territory, and nearby urban areas in Burlington, Vermont, and Ottawa and Montreal, Canada. Our reporters cover the critical issues facing our communities, including criminal justice and prison reform, policing, border and immigration, economic development, rural health care, agriculture, climate change, native issues, and much more. Primary Responsibilities include: General assignment reporter to cover the southern Adirondack region. Produce news stories for broadcast, digital, and social media platforms that serve the mission of the news department to provide coverage of issues of regional importance. Establish a “mini-beat” to dig deeper. Enterprising and self-motivated, able to work on their own, and with a team. Manage the news team’s community engagement efforts, reaching out and listening to North Country residents to help develop deeper stories at the earliest stages of reporting. Using the 650-member NCPR Texting Club (based in the Groundsource platform) and other engagement tools, work with the news team to seed story ideas and callouts. Support other reporters in their callouts and community engagement efforts. Encouraged to file national stories with NPR and other public media outlets. Work closely with editors and fellow reporters to produce your best work. Collaborate with the news team on special projects and investigative journalism. Approximately 65% of time spent doing traditional reporting; 35% spent doing community engagement work. NOTE: This position is based in Glens Falls.
