Key Responsibilities of the ACT/SAT Math and Science Prep Tutor

  • Deliver One-on-One Instruction: Work directly with high school students in a personalized 1-to-1 setting, providing customized instruction tailored to each learner's unique strengths, weaknesses, goals, and learning style.
  • Prepare Students for College Entrance Exams: Coach students through comprehensive ACT and SAT preparation, with a focus on mastering the math and science sections of these high-stakes standardized tests.
  • Teach Core Subject Content: Cover essential topics including algebra I and II, geometry, trigonometry, pre-calculus, biology, chemistry, physics, and data analysis/interpretation as they appear on the ACT and SAT.
  • Teach Test-Taking Strategies: Instruct students in proven test-taking techniques, time management skills, question analysis methods, and anxiety-reduction strategies specific to the ACT and SAT formats.
  • Monitor Student Progress: Track each student's improvement through regular practice tests, diagnostic assessments, and performance reviews, adjusting instructional approaches as needed.
  • Provide Constructive Feedback: Communicate progress, challenges, and recommendations to students and, when appropriate, to parents in a supportive and encouraging manner.

Essential Qualifications

To be considered for the ACT/SAT Math and Science Prep Tutor position at arenaflex Chattanooga, candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree (Required): A four-year degree from an accredited college or university is required. Degrees in mathematics, science, education, engineering, or related fields are highly valued.
  • Tutoring Experience (Required): Previous experience tutoring, teaching, or working with students in an educational capacity is required. This includes formal classroom teaching, private tutoring, teaching assistant roles, coaching, mentoring, or similar positions.
  • Strong Subject Matter Knowledge: Demonstrated mastery of high school-level mathematics (through pre-calculus) and science (biology, chemistry, and/or physics).
  • Excellent Communication Skills: The ability to explain complex concepts in clear, accessible, and engaging ways for students of varying ability levels.
  • Passion for Student Success: A genuine commitment to helping students achieve their academic goals and build lasting confidence.
  • Reliable Commute: Ability to reliably commute to or relocate to the Chattanooga, TN 37421 area before the start of employment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • ACT/SAT Test Experience: Personal experience taking the ACT or SAT, or familiarity with the format, content, and scoring of these exams.
  • Experience with Test Prep: Prior experience preparing students specifically for standardized tests such as the ACT, SAT, PSAT, GRE, or similar exams.
  • Graduate-Level Education: A master's degree or current enrollment in a graduate program in education, mathematics, science, or a related field.
  • Experience Working with High School Students: Background working with high school-aged students in academic, athletic, or mentoring settings.

Schedule and Work Environment

This is a part-time, in-person position based at our arenaflex Chattanooga learning center. Tutors enjoy highly flexible scheduling designed to accommodate a variety of lifestyles. The expected schedule includes:

  • Afternoon shifts (after school hours)
  • Evening shifts (typically until 8:00 PM)
  • Saturday morning availability (typically 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM)
  • Monday through Friday availability
  • Choose-your-own-hours flexibility within the center's operating schedule
  • Summer session opportunities for additional hours

Application Question: Candidates will be asked about their availability to work sometime between Monday-Thursday 2:00-8:00 PM and/or Saturdays 9:00 AM-2:00 PM.
