About the position The Child Welfare Social Worker 1 or 2 - Safety Assessor position at the State of Idaho is dedicated to strengthening the health, safety, and independence of Idahoans. The Child Welfare Social Worker 1 is designed for individuals with general social work qualifications, including a current Idaho social worker license, who may not have prior child welfare experience. This role requires the ability to work effectively with individuals and families under stress and from diverse backgrounds. As a Child Welfare Social Worker, you will engage in various types of casework, including foster care licensing, adoptions, case management, safety assessments, and intake. Some positions may offer the opportunity to telework. The role includes a nine-month probationary period during which incumbents will carry a reduced caseload under the guidance of experienced child welfare supervisors. This training is essential for gaining the knowledge and expertise necessary to provide professional child welfare services to children and families affected by abuse or neglect. The Child Welfare Social Worker 1 is the first level in a six-level job series, and candidates must be licensed as a social worker in Idaho to qualify for the position. The Child Welfare Social Worker 2 position requires a licensed social worker with either a Master’s degree or two years of experience in child welfare. This role involves assessing and processing referrals for child abuse or neglect, conducting interviews, and preparing written intake reports. The Child Welfare Social Worker 2 will also be responsible for making on-site evaluations of foster homes, designing and implementing case plans, and providing crisis intervention services. Both positions require strong communication skills, the ability to work collaboratively with various stakeholders, and a commitment to promoting client self-determination and family preservation.

Responsibilities

  • Receive and process referrals, complaints, or requests for service.

  • Conduct assessment and fact-finding interviews of child abuse or neglect cases.

  • Prepare written intake reports based on initial interviews.

  • Draft case plans related to child abuse/neglect issues with recommendations for service decisions.

  • Provide social services, support, and change-oriented activities to preserve family units.

  • Research, obtain, and make referrals to community resources.

,

  • Prepare court reports, affidavits, and testimony for required court proceedings.

,

  • Consult with experienced social workers, law enforcement, and court personnel.

  • Assess and process referrals for child abuse or neglect as a Child Welfare Social Worker 2.

  • Make on-site evaluations of foster homes for suitability.

  • Design, organize, implement, and monitor effectiveness of case plans.

  • Facilitate client access to support services and determine appropriate placements.

Requirements

  • Current Licensure as a Social Worker in Idaho.

  • Valid driver's license.

  • Master of Social Work degree or two years of experience in a public child welfare system for Child Welfare Social Worker 2.

  • Successful completion of Idaho Welfare Academy sessions and assignments for Child Welfare Social Worker 2.

  • Ability to work effectively with individuals and families under stress.
