WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor - Suffolk County, NY

The WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Coordinator manages the Enhanced Peer Counseling program and supervises day to day activities. Following the NYS DOH WIC Loving Support model, she ensures that the PC staff performs optimally and meets the program's needs. Routine quality assessments (QA) are performed on each PC to promote constant improvement. Work and coordination schedules are with the various WIC centers located in Suffolk County Collect and Manage participant data ensuring confidentiality at all times. This position is grant-funded for a limited time through the WIC office and Suffolk County Department of Health Services. Required Qualifications: Associate's degree and one-year volunteer or work-related experience or high school diploma or equivalency with 2 years of volunteer or work experience. Proficiency with windows-based software, including use of the internet and navigation with various browsers, and Microsoft Office proficiency, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and Publisher. Ability to meet the travel requirements of the position. Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and occasional overnight travel. Ability to carry supplies and equipment. Ability to communicate and to read and write in English and Spanish . Experience with breastfeeding - at least one baby (does not have to be currently breastfeeding). Have good organizational skills, enabling her to manage her assigned caseload, keep track of her scheduled hours, meetings, and training, and meet necessary deadlines. Preferred Qualifications: Experience in adult and youth education or other relevant work experience Enthusiastic about breastfeeding and want to help other mothers enjoy a positive experience. Familiarity with the community in which the work will take place. Experience working with the target audience. Ability to present effective and relevant educational lessons to target audiences (one-on-one and group) and work with diverse audiences of all ages. Ability and willingness to collaborate with diverse audiences and maintain cultural sensitivity. Sound judgment and problem-solving skills, and the ability to keep information confidential. Ability to plan and organize personal work responsibilities according to priorities developed with the immediate supervisor. Ability to work independently and cooperatively as part of a team. Current or previous WIC participants are preferred.
